Introducing the Chiropractors of Progressive Family Wellness Centre
Introducing Scarborough Chiropractor Dr Gary LuePann
I thought I would never be able to play hockey again. That's the thought that ran through my head after weeks of being unable to stand up straight. After a mid-ice collision I suffered for weeks without relief from ice, medications, physiotherapy, acupuncture and with talk of possible back surgery at the age of 14, my introduction to Chiropractic changed my life.
From the first adjustment I felt instant relief. It took a little while for me to fully recover but from day one there was a significant noticeable improvement. I was completely fascinated by my recovery and return to play. In fact, as I continued to play at a competitive level I experienced many serious injuries. Time and time again without a doubt, chiropractic was instrumental in helping me recover and stay healthy through my hockey days. I went on to play hockey for the University of New Hampshire on a full scholarship and had an invite to skate with Team Canada in preparation for the 88 Olympics. I sometimes laugh - how does a boy with a Chinese background who was born and grew up in Jamaica who broke his leg attempting to skate for the very first time at 7 years of age, become an ice hockey player? I don't know but I do know that had I not been introduced to Chiropractic at that time I would not have had the opportunity I did. By the end of high school I knew what I wanted to be. I have experienced and have seen some truly amazing things that hopefully I can share in person one day.
The requirements for admission to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College at the time included: Biology, Psychology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Physics. I started my education at the University of New Hampshire while playing hockey on a scholarship. The challenge of balancing full time hockey and a full time science program forced me to choose between the two. Although I was doing very well in hockey and knowing that a pro career was a possibility, the life span was very short and at best unpredictable. Chiropractic on the other hand I knew would last me a lifetime if I wanted it to. I left the game full time and finished my education at the University of Toronto where I majored in Neuroscience. I wanted to learn as much about the nervous system as I could. I knew this would prepare me well for CMCC.
In our office optimal health is our goal for every patient. It begins with structure and function. One does not exist without the other. The nervous system must be able to communicate well in order for the body to heal and repair itself well. It simply cannot do that if the structure and lack of function of the spine is interfering with that (subluxation). Our major focus is correcting posture (underlying structure), restoring and improving spinal function to improve nervous system function which ultimately improves health. One of the most satisfying parts of what we do is seeing people's energy change. Energy is life. It's amazing that some people get so low that have had no where else to turn and they feel as though life is not worth living. Then in a short period of time you are able to help them smile, laugh and enjoy life again. I am grateful that we get to witness that in our office.
Outside of my office it's family time. My wife Michelle and I have been blessed with 3 beautiful children. Eric (6), Ty (4) and Ella (2) are where I spend the other half of my life. We keep very active around the house or in the neighbourhood usually doing physical activities or playing sports. My sports hobbies are primarily hockey and golf and I love building things in my workshop at home. My other passion is food. I love to cook and I think part of why I exercise so much is so that I can eat whatever I want.
I myself get adjusted at least once a week, most times more often than that. I have a table at home for my family and every Tuesday afternoon is family adjustment time. I work out at least twice a week at the gym and I try to add one workout at home as well. We eat very well and it seems to improve every year. We have more fruits and vegetables in the fridge than anything else. We make our own protein bars now and juice those "hard to eat vegetables” on a regular basis. Every year we add and do more towards health than we ever did before. Our approach to health is to keep things as natural as possible. The less chemicals you put into your body the less detoxification the body has to perform on harmful chemicals. That's why I feel people should have the choice of natural alternatives to medications and the right to chose what enters their bodies from over the counter pain relievers to vaccines.
